Registration for the 2019 Summer Youth Employment Program will open to the public on April 1, 2019. This program, offered by Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro’s Department of Job and Family Services, is open to Summit County residents aged 14-17 as of June 1, 2019 and living in a household with income 200% or less of the federal poverty level. The employment opportunities will be limited, and availability will be determined by age, worksite, and funding. To be considered for the Summer Youth Employment Program, all potential participants must register online at

Once registered online, the participant and her/his parent or guardian will be given instructions regarding continuation of the eligibility determination process and placement in the program. Participants are required to attend an orientation before youth employment begins. Following the orientation, participants will be assigned a job opportunity. When their employment begins, participants in the program will gain real-world work experience, job readiness and compensation. Due to limited funding, placement will be completed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The Summer Youth Employment Program is one part of a multi-pronged strategy to provide a skilled, experienced, and educated workforce to current and prospective Summit County employers, ensuring well-paying jobs remain in our community,” said Executive Shapiro. “A summer job through this program will provide teenagers with a solid foundation to grow upon as they enter the workforce or attend an institution of higher education. Thank you to the many business owners who participate in this program and help provide this important opportunity to our youth.”

The program is also seeking employers to serve as worksites for youth workers. There will be no financial commitment or responsibility for any organization to bring youth workers on board. Employer responsibilities include providing a valuable work experience to youth, basic supervision of youth, and e-mailing or faxing time sheets at the conclusion of each two-week pay period. A worksite orientation will be held the week of June 3—employers are strongly encouraged to attend. Worksites may request reimbursement for basic tools, uniforms, and other items purchased for youth that are needed to do their jobs.

Summer work will begin on June 10, 2019, and the youth-readiness courses will be offered on dates to be determined. Bus passes will be provided to those in need of transportation assistance.
